My latest Self Guided DIY Tour takes in no less than 1,727km of Ireland’s Coastline from Dublin/Rosslare to Cork and Westport. The pack includes 12 possible day routes with a 6 day tour and an 8 day tour option beginning and ending in either Dublin or Rosslare Ferry Terminals. Also included is the Official Wild Atlantic Way route split into county sections, Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway as well as a long list of essential and possible poi’s from ancient stone forts to cafe’s.
The 6 and 8 day tour .gpx guides are broken up into day routes of around 250km (6-8hrs riding time) and ending in what I’d consider the perfect accommodation in the ideal location. Here’s a brief outline of what you’ll get in the GPX pack. These 6 and 8 day Self Guided Tour Routes are suitable for any motorcycle capable of touring with both beginning and ending at either Dublin or Rosslare Ferry Ports..
However those on sports bikes carrying a pillion may not have an easy time on some mountain sections KML files are also supplied, these can be opened in Google Earth. I recommend you use Google Earth’s street view to view the roads, some of which are boreens (small, one track roads, often with grass in the middle) and may be difficult to navigate on some bikes, for inexperienced motorcyclists or those with pillion passengers. If in doubt feel free to ask me any questions before buying, the only stupid question is the one left unasked

Having plowed this region countless times over the years the tour routes are made up of what I’d view as the best possible route and ending each day in the ideal location. That ideal location is dependent on accomodation availability, so depending on when you book your accommodation you may need to adjust the route. Plenty of accomodation options are within the pack list so you should not have a big problem assuming you book well in advance.
.
. Each day route has an approximate riding time of 6-8 hours. This is the time it takes me to ride the route with a small group of 3 or 4 bikes with no pillions on GS type bikes and riding at a good pace but within the speed limits. I’ve found that most folks riding these roads cover an average of between 39km/h to 44km/h over an 8 hour day no matter how fast their bike can potentially go, so do your calculations based on that if customising these routes using the POI options.

Folder 1 – GPX Routes
This will contain your routes in either .gpx, .gdb (Garmin), or .itn (TomTom) formats. The .gpx format can be used in Tyre which is a free map/routing software or on any smartphone with .gpx compatible navigation software. This folder will contain the following routes
- 6 Day Self Guided Tour – Dublin or Rosslare to Westport via Kinsale/Start of the WAW
- 8 Day Self Guided Tour – Dublin or Rosslare to Westport via Kinsale/Start of the WAW
- Optional Bonus Route – Wicklow & Dublin Mountains Discovery Ride
- Optional Bonus Route – Skerries Road Race Circuit
- Optional Bonus Route – Boyne Valley Discovery Ride
- Optional Bonus Route – Munster Vales Discovery Ride
- Official Wild Atlantic Way Route Cork
- Official Wild Atlantic Way Route Kerry
- Official Wild Atlantic Way Route Clare
- Official Wild Atlantic Way Route Galway
Folder 2 – POI’s
In this folder you’ll find all the poi’s in .gpx and .kml (Google Earth) format. The gpx routes do not contain all the poi’s, only some – there are way to many poi’s to include within a route so you can use these separate poi’s to make up your own routes or customise my routes to include the places you’re most interested in. The poi’s are all named logically, camp sites, hotels, pubs, photo stops, mountain passes etc so you can manage and navigate them easily enough.
- POI’s – 520
- Restaurants/cafe’s – 71
- Great Irish Pub’s – 39 (Scary to think I’ve been to every one lol)
- Camping Sites – 24
- Photo Stops – 156
- Hotels/B&B’s – 110
- Whiskey Distilleries – 8 (Booking Essential for Tours)
- Stunning Mountain Passes – 26
- Motorcycle Mechanics – 4
Folder 3 – KML Routes
Simply the routes in .kml format so you can familiarise yourself with the routes/road/junctions/towns in Google Earth street view.
Also remember, when you load the .gpx files into your mapping device, satnav or whatever you need to check the loaded route against my intended route in Google Earth or your mapping software like Tyre, Garmin BaseCamp etc. Satnav devices can often change/recalculate routes when loading depending on your custom settings on your device – if your device custom settings take priority the device can override my intended route and recalculate based on the device settings.
E.G. If you have your device set to avoid ferry’s it will make a mess of the 8 day route in the Kerry section as this route includes a short ferry crossing to Valentia Island resulting in a 40km detour and riding the same road twice. So if you intend to follow my routes exactly just take a moment to check the route loaded onto your device against either the mapping program on your PC or the corresponding kml file in Google maps before you ride off.
There is also a help file included which should explain everything and includes links to all the main accommodation booking sites for Ireland.
